We live in a diverse and constantly changing information‐rich society and culture, immersed in visual communication. In Year 11 Design, students will explore the area of product design, discover that the commercial world is comprised of companies requiring consumer products, services and brands for a particular audience, and are introduced to the concept of intellectual property. Students will work in the contexts of photography and graphics to create a range of product and packaging designs including but not limited to magazine layouts, still life/food photography/styling, T-Shirt design, develop community based photography projects, promotional material, advertisements and culture/sub-culture specific design.
Students will have the opportunity to use a range of digital technology such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, HD cameras and the green screen. In this course, students develop a competitive edge for current and future industry and employment markets.
There are no specific prerequisites, although experience in Year 9 and 10 Visual Art is advantageous.
The Year 11 syllabus is divided into two units, each of one semester duration, which are typically delivered as a pair. The notional time for each unit is 55 class contact hours.
Unit 1 – Design Fundamentals
The focus of this unit is to introduce design process and practice. Students learn that design can be used to provide solutions to design problems and communication needs.
Unit 2 – Personal Design
The focus of this unit is personal design. Students learn that they visually communicate aspects of their personality, values and beliefs through their affiliations and their manipulation of personal surroundings and environments.
Students undertaking year 11 ATAR design can progress into year 12 ATAR design. This course also emphasises the scope of design in professional and trade based industries allowing students to maximise vocational and/or university pathways.
