Bad Boy Turns Good

BY: OLIVIA MOFFITT AND KAREN NAUMOFF

When you think of Marcus Holt, you think of the kind, caring and considerate person that he is. However, this was not the case during his school years at Carine Senior High

School. Would you believe that he was suspended twice, hardly ever abided by school policies and didn't do much work? Even so, he was still referred to by his teachers as "a good kid with a lot of potential."

Tadpole Stirs Up the Pond

Marcus started at Carine in 1978, and completed Years 11 and 12. His favourite subject was English and his favourite teacher was Mrs Krautbauer. He was known to his peers as `Tadpole', being the younger brother of `Froggie'.

In year twelve, Marcus was suspended for swearing at a teacher, and then again for graffitti-ing on a desk.

At his Year Twelve Biology camp, the most memorable moment was when he crashed his car into a tree.

School Achievement

In between his moments of embarrassment, he had many achievements. He won an English Prize and a Public Speaking Prize in 1979. He became the Captain of the Carine Football team, and at the end of his years at Carine Senior High School, he qualified for University.

On the Road to God

In the following years, he decided to fulfil his dream of travelling. He hitch-hiked around Australia and then America twice. He lived in London for two years before returning to Australia. After seeing all the majestic sights and events of the world, he still felt that his life was incomplete and in 1983, he discovered God and said:

`That was what was missing from my life. '

In 1985, Marcus became a Christian and was deeply involved in youth work for some years. He applied for the job as the Carine Senior High School Chaplain in 1993. He deeply believes that God loves and cares about teenagers and wanted to express this.

Marcus Holt is now happily married to his wife Carolyn and has three children. His advice to the students at Carine Senior High School `Don't have conflict with your parents, but love and respect them.
