Library News

Welcome to Library Links –February 2012

Year 8

Year 8 students have visited the library for an orientation to the resource centre, thanks to English staff who allowed us to use some of their time. Year 8’s also had a fiction promotion to familiarise them with our fiction collection and encourage them to read. All students are welcome to visit the library before school and lunch time so they can use the resources, read for leisure or play games - either computer or board games.

Technology

A new feature in the library is a large television to display slide shows of school activities. Currently images of Year 7 orientation day last year are proving quite an interesting display. This complements the digital photo frame which is now showing the Year 11 Presentation Assembly 2011, a celebration of the achievements of the current Year 12’s last year.

Laptops

The laptops will be more easily accessible soon as they will now be housed in the middle of the library, and students will be able to access them personally and use them at point of need.

Study & Homework

Upper school students have begun the year really well…many have been coming to the library in their own time to work either individually or in groups. Hopefully these numbers will increase over time as the library is a great place for study purposes.

From week 5, Mrs Reece will be managing a homework club in the library on Mondays after school from 3.15 - 4.15. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to have increased access to resources and teacher assistance. Teacher librarians are also always available to assist students in all Learning Areas.

Reading

2012 is the National Year of Reading and although we always encourage reading for leisure and life long learning, this year our library will be supporting this terrific initiative.

Not only is literacy improved through reading, it also encourages more sophisticated language and thinking skills and provides an insight into other peoples’ points of view. All students are expected to have a novel to read during English classes and we have a great collection for them to choose from. Many students borrowed lots of books over the holidays and this was wonderful to see, as the holidays mean there is more time to read. Staff also read a lot over the holidays and we currently have a display showing their reading habits.

Displays

Surfboards

Art students from Ms Beardman’s 2011 Year 10 class collaborated and produced 5 brightly coloured sea themed foam surfboards. The library was lucky enough to display them, which provided a wonderful entry to the resource centre for the start of the year. We are hoping to be able to display them on a more permanent basis, as they fit in beautifully with the other art work around the library.

Valentine’s Day

We had a display of romantic fiction for Valentine’s Day.  Beautiful sparkly hearts drew attention to a range of titles, such as The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks, and classics such as Gone with the Wind and Wuthering Heights.

Year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year saw the Year of the Dragon begin so we have a fabulous display on this theme.

Teacher librarians Ms Piruk (library manager), Ms Kirkland and Ms Kagi and library officers Ms Nuttman, Ms Heggs and Ms Griffiths wish you all a successful year and we hope to see you in the library very soon

WAYRBA 2012

 WAYRBA 2012

The library is once again encouraging all students to read from the 2012 list of books nominated for the West Australian Young Readers Book Awards. A display will be  organized and a voting slips will be  placed in each book so that it will be easy to participate.

These awards are created from a list of books nominated the previous year by students at West Australian Schools.  This means that their popularity is guaranteed. No nomination by adults is accepted.  The same rules apply to the voting, the most popular wins through student votes.

Check out some of the picture books- this year has a great range - beautiful examples of how art and literature can complement each other.
