These students made up four performance groups: Orchestra, Senior Band, Chamber Choir and Senior Guitar Ensemble. Of the five national and international tours that Carine music students have undertaken, this would be one of the most successful and rewarding experiences for both students and staff. From a musical point of view, the exchanges and performances with KL provided new links with Schools and Public venues, and rewarding social and cultural interaction. This is fundamental to a successful Music Tour to an Asian destination. Unfortunately our itinerary was changed late in the last week with one school unable to accommodate us due to health concerns. Arriving at the airport at 5.00am, all staff and students where checked in on time and after a smooth trip via Singapore the group arrived in Kuala Lumpur 5.30pm that afternoon. The Dorsett Regency Hotel in KL more than catered for our group, with special foods prepared daily for our dietary needs. Day 2 involved visits to the Kings Palace, National Museum, National Monument, KL Towers and the Petronas Twin Towers, giving us a great view of the city and surroundings. Our tour guides patiently waited from 6.30am at the towers to collect tickets for the whole group. In the afternoon all students hit the shops next door. Day 3: Our first school, St Johns Institution, hosted two visits on Day 2. St Johns is an all Boys school who won the gold medal for their Drum Corp in the national competition. Our Senior Guitar Ensemble performed at their early morning assembly followed by a well received performance by all groups at 11.00am. The social interaction after the performance was enjoyed by all students and staff. Mr David Fernandez, Head of Discipline was responsible for the organisation and will assist us on any return visits. The weather was quite hot for this indoor performance but the students were committed to the task. That evening, following a visit to Chinatown, we attended a cultural dinner with live dancing and music from various Asian cultures. Day 4 took us 30mins out of KL to the Jungle and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. This reclaimed tin mine has been an interesting study into restoring the natural environment and featured a jungle trek with an aerial walkway system 30m above the forest canopy. This was a serious workout for our students and staff but we remained casualty free. Day 5 was the first of our 2 public performances at the newest shopping centre in KL, The Pavilion. With a large Atrium in the centre we had the best venue in town to perform for the public. This coincided with the opening of the new fountain at the main entrance and several Trevi Fountain moments took place. The most rewarding part of our performance was the visit by the chairman and land owner of the Pavilion Shopping Centre, who very rarely appears on the shop floor, to congratulate us on our performance, discipline and appearance. His wife ordered doe nuts and bottled water for the whole group in response to our visit. Fay Mitchell also mentioned that a parent in the audience kept her child from school to come and hear our performances. Day 6 was a return visit to The Pavilion for our replacement performance for our second school. As the last performance of the Tour our students were outstanding showing stamina and commitment in a difficult acoustic. Following the performance we walked the whole tour (93) to the Berjaya Times Square Shopping Centre. Inside this multi storey complex, there is theme park with a Roller Coaster running through the roof and various levels of the complex. Many brave students and 1 staff member took it on, while the rest took in the shopping. Day 7 was a recreation day after a busy week. First stop was the Batu Caves, the Royal Selangar Pewter Factory and the largest water park in the southern hemisphere. The Batu Caves are a Hindu shrine where locals come to worship and climb the 272 steps to the huge caves area. Monkeys guard the area and take property that is not secured (water bottles etc). This venue became a camera shoot for each year group/tour group. The Pewter Factory gave students the opportunity for some hands on experience and some amazing designs in jewellery. Our afternoon included 4 hours at Sunway Lagoon Theme Park with massive water slides and amusement rides. Again it was very difficult to get staff on the rides but 4 staff did enjoy the water slides in this reclaimed open pit tin mine. This huge last day concluded with the Hotel providing a BBQ dinner for the group and a private dining room next to the pool, where we made final presentations to Tour Guides and staff from Peterson Travel. As we left KL on Day 8, we can be proud of the way in which our students represented our school, state and country. Their discipline, motivation and commitment to the Tour was outstanding, and their musical contribution was exemplary. We can be especially proud of the links and relationships formed with Malaysian schools and the venues we visited. I would like to acknowledge the wonderful support from the staff on Tour: Susanna Blitvich, Nolene Evans, Fay Mitchell, Annie Robinson, Rob Lawson, David Parkinson, James Charles and Tony Williamson, who managed our students through a wide range of serious situations across the week 24/7. I also recognise the staff who took classes in our absence and particularly the Office staff who assisted in so many ways to prepare material for this large tour group. Our parents have made many sacrifices to support our tour for the last 15 months. There initiatives and hard work to provide fundraising opportunities allow us to take on such a large project, and our school is fortunate to have such outstanding support. Our students, particularly our senior students, are to be congratulated for their leadership and commitment across the 8 days and I know that they will inspire others in the Arts to be part of future music tours at Carine SHS.
